5 minutes with...Kathryn Edwards, senior surveyor

In this feature, we sit down with Kathryn Edwards, recently promoted to Senior Surveyor, to hear about her career journey, what she loves about the industry, and the challenges she’s overcome along the way.

1. How did you get into the property industry?
My cousin Andrea is a successful chartered surveyor, and she inspired me to get into the sector. She’s been a great role model, and following in her footsteps felt like a natural path.

2. What does your role involve day to day?
No two days are ever the same. One day I might be working on lease renewals or rent reviews, the next I’m drafting service charge budgets. I also love getting out on site visits. It’s the best way to really understand our properties, pick up on details you’d never spot on paper, and build stronger relationships with tenants. Those visits often give me insights that shape the way I manage each site.

3. What do you enjoy most about the industry,  and what frustrates you?
I love how varied it is. No two buildings, clients, or days are the same. You’re constantly learning, and the range of properties you come across, from the quirky to the cutting-edge, keeps things interesting.

On top of that, I find property management to be a really resilient part of the sector. Unlike some areas that rise and fall with market cycles, commercial property management has a steadier demand. Businesses will always need well-managed spaces, whether that’s industrial units, retail, or offices, and professional management is key to keeping those assets performing. It makes it a great long-term career path, with plenty of opportunities to adapt and grow as the industry evolves.

The frustration? Still not enough women in senior positions. I’d love to see more women progressing into leadership roles across the industry.

4. What’s a challenge you’ve overcome in your career so far, and what are you most proud of?
Sitting my APC while six months pregnant was a real test of resilience, and then coming back after maternity leave was another big milestone.

Picking up a full workload again and proving to myself that I could balance motherhood with my career was tough but incredibly rewarding. Navigating that period, growing in confidence, and now being promoted to Senior Surveyor are things I’m really proud of. It feels like all of that hard work has paid off.

6. What do you value most in the people you work with?
We’re a small, hardworking team, and I really value the way we pull together. Everyone brings their own expertise, and there’s always a willingness to help each other out. That collaboration makes a huge difference.

7. What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?
Get as much experience as you can, even while you’re still studying. Whether it’s a graduate role, work placement, or shadowing, practical experience alongside your studies helps you figure out which part of the property industry is the best fit for you, whether that’s asset management,  property management, valuations, or agency. It also gives you a head start when it comes to full-time roles.
